Pan masala : a prelude to oral cancer epidemic

Chandra Sekhar Reddy Madu

Oral cancer is the most common type of cancers and ranked 6th among all types of cancers. India being a very vast country contributes to 1/3 rd
of the population suffering with oral cancer. Tobacco in smoked and smokeless form is the leading pathway to oral cancer in Indian population es-
pecially in the rural population. India being one of the largest populated countries in the world, there is lack of awareness, poverty and increased
habitual consumption of tobacco in India, leading to the highest mortality rate due to oral cancer. Even though there are lots of campaigns, and
creating awareness programs by health care professionals, Oral cancer is progressing rapidly. We have done a rapid and extensive study on pro-
gression of oral cancer with age, gender, site, based on habit and counseling. Even though lots of efforts are being made to control the disease,
there are massive rise, leading to severe progression of oral cancer causing mortality. There should be a check of tobacco related products to
control the disease and reduce the mortality rate.
