Data 'sanity': statistics and reality

Davis Balestracci

A quality improvement context invalidates many assumptions perpetuated by traditional researchoriented statistical thinking,t hereby rendering commonly used analyses inappropriate. The science of quality improvement is radically different from clinical research. In addition, the stigma resulting from past (often compulsory) statistics courses often presents a formidable cultural barrier to the much-needed simple, effici ent data collection and analysis methods which are key to improving existing healthcare processes in real time. Proper implementation of statistical thinking has implicationsfor and far beyond clinical outcomes.
