Local Analgesic Infiltration and Post-Partum Hyperalgesic Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

Agar N, Gremeau AS, Bonnin M and Vendittelli F

Background: Pelvic pain is common during pregnancy and postpartum and is often indicative of pubic dysfunction. The clinical symptoms are well documented and diagnosis is confirmed if x-ray shows pubic diastasis greater than 10mm. Unfortunately, initial medical management comprising oral analgesia, rest, pelvic belt and physiotherapy is not often effective.

Cases: We report the cases of three patients, with different obstetrical histories, who presented with acute pelvic dysfunction syndrome postpartum. All three received local infiltration.

Conclusion: Local infiltration in case of acute pubic dysfunction resistant to medical treatment is an effective solution. This analgesia is rapid and has long-lasting effects.
